    Ego and Conflicts

Ego awareness can be a great aid during conflicts. Professional mediator Diane Hamilton talks at Google. Few things I am taking away. Our primitive brain sees conflict as a threat. It is a useful practice to stop the thinking brain (usually negative thoughts), spend some time noticing the body sensation and only after that analyze the thoughts and come to a middle ground. Ego can be in different levels. Self, self and other, ethno centric, world centric and then cosmic centric. The wider it is the wiser it becomes! It is natural to be ego centric in the most threatening conflict situation. With practice on self awareness we can do…

Looking Back: Five Years of My New Career and Life

Today is the 5th anniversary of my post Microsoft life :). Hard to believe how time flies! It was not just a new career I wanted to pursue; I also wanted to be part of the neighborhood I lived in. Being someone coming from totally different culture and moving towards an even more unknown career I had to go through a steep learning curve many take for granted.  Today I decided to take a pause and celebrate by reflecting on the past five years of my life. Other than completing the coach training to obtain a Certified Professional Coach (CPC) and Associated Certified Coach(ACC), here is a snapshot of what…

The Pen is Luxurious Than the Keyboard

This year I have made a commitment – I will be more accountable to myself. I found a paper notebook is helping me in this regard. Every day/week I am jotting down what I want to focus on, what my intention is and how I am doing.  A paper and pen is definitely not the state of the art personal productivity tool but surprisingly enough it is helping me to be more mindful about my time. I now have more clarity about where I am with respect to my bigger goals (also written/drawn on a paper).  I wonder, what is the point on going back to a non-tech solution when I…

Optimize Yourself With a Mind-Body Connection

On the first day of my coach training class the instructor gave us a meditation exercise. The purpose was to be ready and present for the session. As someone coming from the high paced, left brained,  hardcore technology field I was not able to appreciate it much. Noticing my breathing and the body parts seemed totally nonintellectual!  To make things even worse, she asked us to imagine forming a circle with our ancestors and dance with them – I totally checked out and waited impatiently till she came back to reality. 4 years after, as a coach and a workshop facilitator now I have learned to appreciate the value of mind-body…

Afraid of Feedback? Find How It Serves You Best

If you are a corporate employee, notice the feeling you are having when you read the word “Feedback”. “I have some feedback for you” often creates the same or worse visceral reaction as “we have a problem”! A quick web search brought this definition of feedback: Comments in the form of opinions and reactions to something, intended to provide useful information for future decisions and development. Based on my experience, the more common connotation of feedback is: It is unpleasant, negative and often brings a defensive behavior. Now that I am not part of the corporate system and I don’t have the luxury of getting the unsolicited feedback regularly, I thought I wouldn’t…

There Is More Than One Reality – Choose That Serves

“Reality is reality, there is no point to sugar coat it “– a friend of mine uttered with a great sigh! I agree and there is more. It reminded me of the story of a young woman, Irene, who didn’t try to sugar coat a gloom “reality”. Instead she chose to focus on another reality –It turned her around from being stuck to being successful. When Irene reached out to me during February this year, she had been feeling stuck. She was not able to make any progress in her PhD thesis for a very long time, every time she tried to force her, it backfired. Her thoughts/ideas got crippled by…
