- Assume Positive Intentions. Interpret inquiries positively, recognizing that they stem from a desire for your happiness.
- Reflect and Process. If certain questions or situations bother you, take a moment to reflect on why and consider how you can address these feelings.

Here’s a quick tip about managing your triggers:
- Be aware of your triggers. Notice how your body reacts when someone makes a statement that upsets you (e.g., a pounding heart, tight stomach, or clenched jaw).
- Pause before responding. Take a few mindful breaths to neutralize your physical reaction and ground yourself. If you feel unable to manage your emotions, it’s okay to step away from the discussion.
To engage more effectively, Braver Angels recommends the LAPP method:
- L – Listen: Hear them out fully without interrupting.
- A – Acknowledge: Verbally recognize what they’ve shared to show you’ve understood.
- P – Pivot: Ask if they’d like to hear your perspective.
- P – Perspective: If they agree, share your viewpoint calmly and respectfully.
This method encourages mutual respect and understanding, helping to turn potential conflicts into meaningful conversations.
